Kim sits in the chair by the window, waiting for the sun to rise.
'Almost lost both of them.'
Every so often she turns to look at Chase, noting his even breaths and undisturbed sleep. At least tonight, one of them is sleeping well. The conversation with her dad's still too fresh to process, but she's unable to stop worrying.
He doesn't think he deserves to live and she doesn't know how to convince him otherwise. So much lost that sometimes it's hard to remember why any of them keep fighting. But Chris and Chase are okay and Michelle...she's surviving. Her Dad however just seems barely there and it's getting harder to pull him away from the edge.
Is it fair to keep him somewhere he doesn't want to be?
Fair or not, she's selfish enough to hold onto him.
She wants to believe that somehow her dad will come back to them. She's seen glimpses. But he's so depressed and easily startled and refuses to admit that he's putting off rehab.
He's slipping away.
She makes a mental note to talk to Chris soon and glances at Chase.
It's hard sometimes being grateful for what you have when the things that are gone are forever.
