OOM: Kim-Miriam
A car drives up to the house in the middle of the night.
Kim's woken by a loud bang and for a few horrible moments she thinks it's a gunshot. The next thing she hears is a knock on the door. 'Chase must have forgotten his keys,' she thinks and slips out of bed to look down from her bedroom window, expecting to see his car. Her stomach clenches as she recognizes the car parked in front of her house, but even an assassin would be preferable to this visitor.
"Miriam," she whispers and hears another knock, a little more forceful.
She throws a t-shirt on over her tank top and toes into a pair of sneakers, moving quickly so that Miriam won't wake up Angie because oh God she doesn't want to explain any of this to her little girl.
Before opening the door she looks through the peephole just to make sure. "Miriam - I - "
"Where's Jack?" Miriam demands, her voice is sharp but her lip trembles.
"I know that you must be - "
"Kim, where's your father? Don't tell me you don't know because I saw you with him at my house - our house - how could you...." she swallows and her shoulders slump, one hand rising to touch the strap of her handbag. "I need to talk to him. I need to understand how this happened, how my Chris..."
Kim moves to touch her shoulder but after seeing the look in Miriam's eyes she lets her hand drop. "What did CTU tell you?"
"They called after Chris was...hours later and said he'd died during interrogation," she lifts her head and Kim glances away. "Jack ran the interrogation didn't he?"
"That's not what happened," Kim says, meeting Miriam's gaze. "It's not - "
"I - we were there for you after your father died, Chris loved your dad like a son, we both cared a great deal about your family, and - " Miriam sniffs, wiping under her right eye. "I shouldn't be surprised you're defending him. Even after he came back you kept coming to me for comfort, maybe you helped set Chris up -- " Without waiting to be invited, she walks into the house and closes the door behind her.
"Miriam, you don't know what you're talking about and I don't want to tell you like this if you just come back - " She wants to turn and run but tries to stay calm.
"He loved you," Miriam whispers and finally starts to cry. "Your dad hated him so much but Chris never blamed- "
"Stop - ," she says quietly and tries to steel herself for the next few minutes. "He did, he...you don't know what kind of man he was, the things he authorized." She tastes bile as she remembers everything.
"Chris would never have killed all those people. Not my - "
"He's the reason my dad was found by the Chinese, he was working with them he...he was a traitor." Her voice falters and she takes a breath. "He handed him over for torture, he - they - it was all for oil, that's it, that's why so many people died and why Michelle's a widow and why there are detainment centers and -- " she's on the verge of tears again and she would have thought she'd been drained of emotion earlier.
"I don't believe you," Miriam gasps. "Why would CTU have lied to me?"
"Because of his employer," she closes her eyes and presses her lips together. "He was working for President Logan."
Miriam's eyes widen and she places a hand against the wall for support. "Logan? No, he - I met him at dinners, he wouldn't have - he couldn't have - how can I believe..."
"I'm telling you the truth," she emphasizes. "I love you and I - I thought you should know."
"If you love me you'll tell me how Chris really died," Miriam's tone is harsh and Kim's suddenly worried about what she might do if she finds out about Michelle's involvement.
"It was quick." Kim says after a few moments, unconsciously echoing words said months earlier. "My dad didn't kill him and I - I'm so sorry, I know how much you...I'm so sorry."
Another sob escapes Miriam and she moves back to the door. "Chris would never betray his country or the people he loves. Never."
"I don't want it to be true either," Kim whispers and takes a step toward her.
Miriam barely looks at her before she opens the door and lets it slam closed behind her. Kim feels a chill go through her as Miriam leaves and doesn't follow although she wants to beg for her to stay.
Instead she lies down on the couch, covers herself with a blanket, and replays their conversation over in her mind.
