After Milliways
May. 24th, 2006 11:42 pmKim blinks, looking down at herself and at her surroundings...somehow, no time has passed at all. On instinct, she feels for the strap of her laptop case, realizing that she left it back in the bar...with all her notes. Although she doesn't think it will work, she goes back through the doors, finding only the outside of the library.
"Dammit," she whispers, going in and out of the library one more time, this time drawing strange looks from some of the students outside smoking. At least she remembered her purse, which means she won't have to call Chase and ask him to pick her up.
Chase.
She rubs her thumb over the spot where her engagement ring used to be and she knows that he'll see something different about her immediately. She looks older, she noticed it when looking in the mirror at her Dad's house. So much has happened over a short period of time. She hasn't seen Chase since before everything.
Suddenly, there's no one left to pretend for, no one to be strong for or have to keep from worrying. It's just her, walking toward the parking lot of her college, dusk falling around her, competely annonymous and alone, completely screwed as far as her thesis goes because all her notes are still near her laptop, which is in her Dad's suite, and she has no way of controlling how she'll get back.
Or when.
She focuses on the easy things first: Opening the door, starting the car, finding a radio station. Next, harder things, like the way the back of her chair rubs against her scar or the fact that it's been so long for her she has to think about the route to take home, and of course what the hell she's going to say to Chase when he asks her what happened, or if he even does.
It's been so long she is afraid her feelings have changed and so many things to tell or not tell - is it cruel to tell him about her dealings, would it be unfair to burden him with problems he cannot control, would her Dad's kidnapping and torture -- would *Angie's* kidnapping and torture be fair to tell him. In the Bar, it made sense to get him and bring him back, but if she can't --
She sniffs, rubbing her eye with the side of her hand, realizing that for the first time in months, she is truly alone.
